The Power Of Name Brands
The bizarre stories I’ve been hearing about Donald Trump’s purchase and revamping of Lamborghini make my blood boil. It appears he took (once agian) a perfectly good company, and destroyed it. I guess he’s been taking his Satan pills again latley. I used to own a Lamborghini back when owning one meant something. Did you know that the Miura was named after one of the best bullfighters of all time? It seems like another era. From what I hear Trump is intent on making Japanese-style compact family cars for Lamborghini. Ouch. Maybe I am just getting old - I mean, what should it matter to me if a car company sells its’ soul? It’s just a brand, right? It shouldn’t be like when Bob Dylan started singing for the Bank Of Montreal, should it? Then again, I’m old enough to remember when Coke tried to mess with its’ hundred year-old ingredients. The consumer backlash was heavy enough to create Coke Classic. And where’s New Coke now, Mr. Trump?

Chinese Ahead Of The Curve In New Car Design | | Have you ever ben to China? I just bopped over to Shanghai and what I saw there just about flipped my lid. I love American cars, but what they’ve got buzzing around Shanghai city streets these days is light years ahead of what our designers at Ford and GM are occupying their time with. I think someone needs to charter a group flight and send our US guys over there for a look at what’s going on ;otherwise, I’m afraid us Americans are going to miss the boat. One awesome car I saw over there is the Xing Goa “Olympic”. Even though the Games are set for Beijing next year, you can spot Olympic fever all over Shanghai. I guess making an “Olympic” car is just a natural outpouring of that national enthusiasm. My Chinese friend Yao took me for a spin in his “Olympic” which just knocked my socks off. The inside of that car looked more like an F-15 than a family sedan, but it’s the same car he uses to pick up his wife and kids every day after work. In China they really have an enthusiasm for the family as well; not like here, where sometimes people call you uncool for wanting to have a wife and kids at home.

A Mechanic Retires | | Well, I have some really exciting news. Last week I finished my last day of work as a mechanic! I have been a mechanic and working on cars since the age of 16 and next week is my 55th birthday. Yes that?s right it?s time to give these sores muscles and weak bones a break. It?s time to retire. What more fitting than to finish my career by buying one of those 55+ homes that my wife and I recently discovered. Have you heard of these 55+ communities? These places are great and to tell you the truth it was only 6 months ago that I?d first heard of them. They are plots of land with houses on them purely for people aged 55 and over. I couldn?t believe these places actually existed. Maybe I have been living in the stone ages because apparently they are all the rage. And, this leaves me with a lot more time to spend working on my hobby of restoring old cars. The property we have purchased has a huge garage that will accommodate all my tools and other car parts I have accumulated over the years. The next project I have planned is to restore and old Shelby Mustang. I’ve always dreamed of doing this but never really had the time to put in the effort to make it near original. I haven’t decided on the model yet but I will keep you posted.

Buying Used Cars | | Now, I know a lot of you who come to this website are only interested in reading about the latest model sports cars and hey so am I, but sometimes we tend to forget about the topic of Used Cars. Over the years I?ve purchased some great used cars and I?ve also purchased some real lemons too. The best used car I think I bought was a Leyland Mini. It was bright yellow, had done about 80,000 miles but she ran like a beauty and never gave me any trouble. I think I owned her for about 5 years before I decided to sell her to some young kid who wanted to restore Minis as a hobby. When it comes to lemons, I?ve also had my fair share of shockers. I bought a Toyota Celica GT4 when I was in my twenties and what a waste of money that turned out to be. I think I had the car for about 3 days when the engine blew and I was quoted at about $5,000 to have a rebuilt put in. I had originally purchased the car for $12,000 and as I didn?t have $5,000 to repair the engine, I had to sell it for $4,000. So if anyone else out there has any stories of purchasing used cars, please feel free to share it here.
