Reverse parking into a parking bay is better!

Here’s something I didn’t realise. The UK’s Institute of Advanced Motorists Limited is advocating reverse parking. The following are the benefits of reverse parking rather than entering your parking bay head-first:

  • Data shows it takes about 90 seconds for an average 5-year old car’s engine to warm up and reach its thermal efficiency. According to IAM, reversing out of a parking bay while the engine is cold takes up between 20-25 times more fuel than when it is warm. Apparently driving away forwards will help you save fuel. Could be related to the usually lower gear ratio of the reverse gear compared to the first gear.
  • The UK’s Highway Code actually encourages reverse parking. This is because reversing into a parking bay which remains static (just an empty piece of road/cement, nothing will suddenly fill it up) is safer than reversing out into a road/lane which may have constant traffic where you cannot see easily. Driving out forwards into the road makes it easier for you to look out for incoming traffic.
  • Reversing close to a wall may make it more difficult for thieves to break into your boot as there will not be enough space for them to work.
  • With the amount of crime these days, it is easier to get out of the parking bay as fast as possible driving forward as it is easier for you to see where you are going in case you have to leave as fast as you can for security reasons.

Grrrrr? New Holden Monaro

Last week I decided to purchase a new car and rather than take out a car loan I decided I would use my American Express Platinum card. Bold move one may say, but the amount of points I gained by doing this is almost enough to buy a round-trip airline ticket. The credit card processing services of Amex are second to none, especially if you are a platinum member. So, enough about the logistics, what did I buy you ask!

I decided to buy the new Holden Monaro in jet black. An awesome vehicle that has torque that would give any exotic car a run for it’s money. Naturally, I went with all the extras, 21inch rims, leather interior and the all important Cerwin Vega stereo system complete with twin 12inch woofers. I took it for a spin the day I bought it and it certainly is a head turner. Of course all of my friends wanted to give it ago but there was no way I was going to let that happen!

GM Volt unveiling

Autocarros Mercedes Benz Usados

General Motors Corp is rushing to finish the production version of its Chevy Volt and plans to unveil a showroom-ready model of the heavily touted electric car in September, people familiar with the project say.

Battered by a deepening slump in sales and concerns about whether it can ride out the downturn, GM is counting on the Volt to break its costly association with gas-guzzling vehicles at a time when truck sales are tumbling and gas prices are near record levels.

GM is likely to complete the production version of the Volt by early August and plans to show it off in September, just when the embattled automaker celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding, people familiar with the plans said.

A GM spokesman declined to comment on the timeline for its next announcements on the Volt, which will include naming a supplier for the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery pack, the single most expensive element of the vehicle and the component seen as critical to its success.

“Everyone is waiting for the next steps,” Rob Peterson, spokesman for GM’s electric vehicle program, told Reuters. GM designers and engineers are “getting very close” to a production-ready version of the Volt, he said.

GM showed off a concept version of the Volt in January 2007 but has retooled the look of the vehicle significantly since then, in part in order to improve its aerodynamics, representatives of the automaker have said.

GM has already shown a near-production version of the Volt to a Los Angeles-area focus group of consumers as it pushes toward production of the vehicle by late 2010 under a development plan the GM board approved in June.

By unveiling the final version of the Volt at a centennial observation in September, GM will be looking to shift the focus for investors and consumers from its current sales slump toward the more fuel-efficient vehicles it has in development.

The automaker, which saw its stock hit a 54-year low last week, is expected to use the circuit of major auto shows that begins with Paris in October to unveil a series of upcoming vehicles that will underscore its effort to move away from a reliance on light trucks.

VOLT: READY FOR ITS HOLLYWOOD CLOSE-UP

In a further bid to create buzz, the Volt is one of several GM cars set to make an appearance in the action movie “Transformers 2,” scheduled for release next summer, a person familiar with the matter said.

GM was heavily involved in the production of the first Michael Bay-directed “Transformers” film, released last summer, and provided a concept version of its 2009 Camaro for a central turn in the movie.

GM is designing the Volt to run for 40 miles (64 km) on a lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged at a standard electric outlet. The Volt will also capture energy from braking, like a traditional hybrid, and feature an on-board engine that will be used to send power to the battery on longer trips.

GM is racing Toyota Motor Corp <7203.T> to bring the first plug-in car to the marketplace and has already featured the Volt in its advertising, part of a bid to improve the public image of the fuel efficiency of its car line-up.

Just as the Detroit-based automakers once rolled out limited-edition performance cars to create a buzz around their brands, the Volt has emerged as a kind of environmentally friendly “halo car” that GM hopes will have as much impact as the Prius hybrid has had for Toyota.

Two suppliers have been in the running to provide lithium-ion batteries for the Volt: A unit of Korea’s LG Chem <051910.KS> said last month that it was ready to supply batteries for the Volt, and German auto parts supplier Continental AG , adapting battery technology used by privately held A123 Systems, is also competing for the Volt battery contract.

The Volt marks one of the first attempts to adapt lithium-ion batteries, widely used in consumer electronics, for a car, although Toyota and others are pressing ahead with their own work on the same technology.

GM celebrates its centennial on Sept. 16, the anniversary of its founding by Billy Durant. It kicked off a series of events last year to mark the date, but those have been overshadowed by concerns about its performance and whether it has sufficient cash to ride out the downturn in U.S. sales.

GM’s U.S. sales are off 15 percent this year, and analysts expect the automaker to raise additional capital to shore up liquidity as it looks to turn around its U.S. operations.

Cityline Lied Makes it to #1 on Google
If you are thinking about buying a car from Cityline Auto in Providence and are checking them out online, the first result you will find on Google is this website. Not bad for 4 weeks. That’s how long ago I decided to put this site up and warn people about Cityline Auto in Providence and tell them how Ronnie, the owner looked me in teh face and lied through his teeth.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a vengeful person. I did not want to take the time or energy to do this. I even called Cityline Auto when it became clear to me that I was lied to. I offered to sell back the car he sold me for $1000 for just $500. I knew I had made a mistake by taking his word. I wanted to take responsibility. And at the time, i would have been happy to have the $500. No longer.
I’ve now spent $800 to keep the car running and am toild that to make it safe will cost me another $2850. That is a serious chunk of change. I haven’t decided yet what to do.
But if putting up this site saves even one person from being lied to and keeps them from buying a car from Cityline Auto in Providence, then I suppose it is worth it.
If anyone wants to buy this site from me, you can maintain it yourself or take it down. I’d be happy to sell the domain for just $2850. Autocarros Mercedes Benz Usados
